The release of the 1989 Disney animated film The Little Mermaid marked a changing time for Walt Disney Studios. After it was a total box-office success, and became the first Disney film in 18 years to win an Oscar award, the following decade was a true Disney Renaissance period.

1. Sebastian was supposed to be English
That's right, everyones favorite animated crab was originally set to be English, however lyricist/producer Howard Ashman suggested that they make him a Caribbean crustacean instead, which then led to the upbeat Caribbean-inspired song "Under the Sea" which in turn went on to win and Oscar for Best Song.
