Imagine a world where a storyline is too extreme for Game of Thrones? Well, we live in it. You don’t watch Thrones for pleasure, enjoyment, or a happy ending, you must only watch it if you’re actively looking to get your heartbroken on a weekly basis.

George R.R. Martin has been exceptionally busy over the last two decades formulating a lethal cocktail of death, deceit, and more death ready to turn our leisure time into just another chore. We’ve grown to love characters over the years in both the book series and the show itself, but that of course is effectively the same as swinging the sword down through their neck.

But while we’ve all been traumatised into a strange desensitised state, there were some other storylines that were dropped from the series before the first book was even published, and while some of them may have made for intriguing prospects, others would’ve gone too far on the show, including one of the craziest love triangles you could imagine between three major characters.

If Martin had religiously followed his original plan, who knows how successful the series would’ve become, but you’d imagine it wouldn’t have been half as successful without the amendments which found their way into the final editions.

Prepare to question everything you thought you knew about Westeros and beyond.

8. Only Stark Vs. Lannister

Forget the Boltons, Freys, Tyrells, Martells, and the Iron Born, Game of Thrones was originally intended to be a historical series based heavily on the War of the Roses and rumours suggest Martin had to be convinced to drop dragons and a host of other fantasy elements into the original plot.

The show was intended to be a straight shoot-out between the Starks and Lannisters, while young Joffrey ‘Baratheon’ held the throne. This isn’t a case of a storyline being dropped (more like a hundred more plots being added) but to flesh out a trilogy of Stark vs. Lannister, there’d have to be some crazy moments that will never make it to the books or screen now.
