Goku unlocked the secrets of Super Saiyan on a distant, alien world battling an evil that he needed to destroy to protect the entire universe. Being a Saiyan raised by a human father (not to mention the head trauma that made him more docile), Goku was able to access his emotions in a way no Saiyan had done before, which made the leap to Super Saiyan accessible to him. Notable characters like Vegeta resented Goku for reaching this level before him, but maybe he wasn't the only one with a problem.
